Indigofera tinctoria, also called true indigo, is a species of plant from the bean family that was one of the original sources of indigo dye. It has been naturalized to tropical and temperate Asia, as well as parts of Africa, but its native habitat is unknown since it has been in cultivation worldwide for many centuries. Today most dye is synthetic, but natural dye from indigofera tinctoria is still available, and we love it. Dye is obtained from the processing of the plant's leaves. Indigo is a deep and rich colour close to the colour wheel blue (a primary colour in the RGB Colour Space), as well as to some variants of ultramarine. It is traditionally regarded as a colour in the visible, as well as one of the seven colours of the rainbow: the colour between violet and blue; however, sources differ as to its actual position in the electromagnetic field.
